As the wedding draws near, most brides opt for a party. Some call it a bridal shower, and others call it a bachelorette, but people have used these two terms so interchangeably that we need to specify what each one is.

The bridal shower

A bridal shower is a simple affair, kind of like an engagement party. The aim is to “shower” the bride-to-be with gifts for her new home and advice from her more experienced friends and relatives.
Since it’s more sedate, the bride and groom’s mothers and other older relatives can be there too. The bridal shower is usually held in a house, organised by the maid of honour, and can be a surprise send-off for the bride.
The bachelorette party

The bachelorette is an avenue for the bride-to-be to let her hair down and have fun with her friends. It marks the bride-to-be’s last party as a single woman. There’s usually a lot of sex humour, naughtiness and alcohol.
The party is usually organised by the bride’s friends, especially her maid of honour. It could be at a bar, on a hike, some beach fun, at a resort, or even a trip the girls will never forget. Needless to say, this is a girls-only party, and having older relatives could cramp your style and so they are usually not invited!
Most people make their parties a mix of both, with some of the fun and noise of the bachelorette party mixed with the gift-giving of the shower. That is okay too.
